Timing, timing, timing! That is the main concern of a digital designer charged with designing a semiconductor chip. What is it, how is it described, and how does one verify it? The design team of a large digital design may spend months architecting and iterating the design to achieve the required timing target. Besides functional verification, the timing closure is the major milestone which dictates when a chip can be released to the semiconductor foundry for fabrication. This book addresses the timing verification using static timing analysis for nanometer designs.

Memory Systems: Cache, DRAM, Disk is the fi rst book that takes on the whole hierarchy in a way that is consistent, covers the complete memory hierarchy, and treats each aspect in signifi cant detail. This book will serve as a defi nitive reference manual for the expert designer, yet it is so complete that it can be read by a relative novice to the computer design space. While memory technologies improve in terms of density and performance, and new memory device technologies provide additional properties as design options, the principles and methodology presented in this amazingly complete treatise will remain useful for decades. I only wish that a book like this had been available when I started out more than three decades ago. It truly is a landmark publication. Kudos to the authors.

The AMBA AXI protocol supports high-performance, high-frequency system designs. The AXI protocol: • is suitable for high-bandwidth and low-latency designs • provides high-frequency operation without using complex bridges • meets the interface requirements of a wide range of components • is suitable for memory controllers with high initial access latency • provides flexibility in the implementation of interconnect architectures • is backward-compatible with existing AHB and APB interfaces. The key features of the AXI protocol are: • separate address/control and data phases • support for unaligned data transfers, using byte strobes • uses burst-based transactions with only the start address issued • separate read and write data channels, that can provide low-cost Direct Memory Access (DMA) • support for issuing multiple outstanding addresses • support for out-of-order transaction completion • permits easy addition of register stages to provide timing closure. The AXI protocol includes the optional extensions that cover signaling for low-power operation. The AXI protocol includes the AXI4-Lite specification, a subset of AXI4 for communication with simpler control register style interfaces within components. See Chapter B1 AMBA AXI4-Lite.

The UVM (Universal Verification Methodology) Class Library provides the building blocks needed to quickly develop well-constructed and reusable verification components and test environments in SystemVerilog.

PHASE-LOCKED loops (PLLs) and delay-locked loops (DLLs) are often used in integrated circuits in order to compensate for clock distribution delays and to improve overall system timing. PLLs are also widely used in clock recovery and frequency synthesis. When compared to traditional implementations of PLLs and DLLs, an all-digital approach will be found more suitable for monolithic implementation on the same die with other digital circuits. A robust, process-independent performance is expected using all digital techniques.
