How to rename diskgroup in 10g ASM (Pre-11gR2 release)

 

       rename diskgroup option is a new feature of 11gR2 .

       The command renamedg was introduced in 11gR2; however, there are many cases where a diskgroup in a 10g or 11.1 environment needs to be renamed. You can use this tool to rename your 10g or 11gR1 ASM diskgroup

       In these cases, the 11gR2 stack, or more specifically Oracle Restart (Oracle Grid Infrastructure for Single Instance) needs to be installed on the server(s) where the diskgroup will be performed. It is not necessary to install 11gR2 RAC for this. Also, it is not necessary to start the Oracle Restart stack (you simply need the dormant software installation for the renamedg command).


1. Install 11.2.0.1 Oracle Restart (Oracle Grid Infrastrcuture for Single Instance)

2. Apply backport patch 8935942. This step is not needed for 11.2.0.2 as its included
3. unmount diskgroup that will be renamed
4. Run renamedg from the Oracle Restart home. Review Oracle Storage Administrator's Guide for details on executing renamedg

   cd <11gr2 grid home>/bin
   renamedg
   use renamedg tool to rename 10g or 11gR1 diskgroup.

5. Optionally deinstall Oracle Restart software stack. If frequent diskgroup renames will be needed, then its recommended not to
deinstall the Oracle Restart stack.
6. Mount diskgroup


Diskgroup cannot be renamed under following conditions :

- the Diskgroup is mounted
- the Diskgroup is being used by CSS
- Diskgroup contains offline disks
