ROOT: ACU_, ACR_

The Latin root acu_ or acr_ means "sharp". Pay attention to the five core words in which the root acu_ or acr_ appears: acrid, acrimony, acuity, acumen, acute.

acrid: comes from acr_ meaning "sharp" and the Latin suffix -id meaning "haveing a particular quality". Thus ,acrid means "having a sharp quality in taste or smell; bitter or burning to the sense"

EG: The acrid smoke hurt our eyes.

A word based on acrid is acridity, meaning "the state or quality of being acrid; acridness"

EG: The acridity of the smoke made our eyes water.

英语译为汉语,大多是比较难的。总好象是雾里看花,结果看出的花非花。

但英语总有它自己的一些特殊的用法,掌握了这些特殊的用法,也就 matser 了英语。

  I.  It 的造句。

(1) “it...不定词”
(a) It is wrong to tell lie.
(b)  He dosen't think it wrong to tell lie.

    [解说] 这种形式上主词或宾语上的说法,是中文里没有的。这些真正的主词或宾语被移到句子后面去了,于是在原来的位置上就有了一个空缺,只得用 it 来填补上去。
    如果把(a)句中真正的主语恢复到它原来的位置,就成为:
    To tell lie is wrong.
    这正是中国话的表现方法,但英语中除极少情况外,不喜欢用不定词来作主语。如:

    To teach is to learn.
    To eat is to live.

不定式作主语或宾语的用法:

461. Your father thought it fit to leave me guardian.
你父亲认为请我做监护人最为合式。

462. If God sees it fit that I should marry, he would provide me with a worthy husband.
