Fay: Welcome to CaliforniaComputers China, Tom! I’m the manager of the Project Department. My name is FayChang.

 

Tom: It’s an honor to meetyou, Ms. Chang.

 

F: Here is your desk. Weput all programmers in this large room. But you have a divider for privacy.

 

T: May I put my coat here?Thanks. So this is my PC?

 

F: Yes, it’s a standalone (单机) personal computer as well as a terminal linked tothe server.

 

T: Is this my telephone?

 

F: Yes. See, your extensionis 5421. All calls come through the switchboard. The receptionist (/rɪ'sɛpʃənɪst/,接待员) has a list with everyone’s name and extension.

 

T: That’s a relief. It’snice to know people outside can get hold of me. I was in such a hurry thismorning to be on time that I forgot my cell phone at home.

 

F: We do limit personalcalls to one minute during work hours, Tom. If you have a personal emergency,please tell me and I will permit you to deal with it.

 

T: Thanks for telling me. Idon’t want break any rules. Is there anything I should know, Ms. Chang?

 

F: Here’s company manual.As you can see from the Table of Contents, it tells you what the protocol isfor everything we do.

 

T: I see a section foremergencies.

 

F: Yes. I want you to readthe manual this afternoon. That way you’re prepared for anything andeverything.

 

T: What else will I bedoing today? Will I be starting on a project?

 

F: No, that’s Wednesday.For the rest of the morning you’ll be in Human Resources filling out the paperworkfor pay and benefits.

 

T: That’s important.
