Robert E. Kahn出生于1938年12月23日。

 

Kahn于1960年从City College of New York获得其学士学位，1962年和1964年分别从普林斯顿大学获得其硕士和博士学位。

 

在贝尔实验室工作一段时间后，Kahn成为MIT电子工程系的一个助理教授(Assistant Professor)。然后，Kahn请假离开MIT加入了BBN(www.bbn.com )并且负责ARPANET的研发工作。ARPANET是的一个packet-switched网络。

 

1972年，Kahn加入了DARPA(www.darpa.mil ),并且成为IPTO的部门主管。

 

在ARPANET早期阶段，ARPANET的通讯协议是NCP。Kahn与Cerf一起合作提出了TCP/IP协议。TCP/IP协议已经成为现代Internet的通讯基础。

 

1986年，Kahn离开DARPA并且创办了非营利的公司CNRI(Corporation for National Research Initiatives)。目前，Kahn是CNRI的董事长和CEO。
