Caltrans to turn lights on Cabrillo Bridge for New Year

The $500,000 installation caps the $38 million restoration of the 100 year old bridge, built for the 1915 16 Panama California Exposition.

Caltrans spokesman Edward Cartagena said along with the lights on the bridge deck, the 50 and 140 watt lights, all 10 inches in diameter, will be activated by a photo sensor at dusk and dawn.

The bridge work, expected to wrap up by March, includes reinforcing the bridge's arches, rebuilding the bridge deck, adding catwalks and a drainage system inside the arches and John Elway Broncos Jersey relandscaping the median and banks of state Route 163 that runs through the central arches.

"The work we are doing will help preserve this iconic structure for decades to come," said Dennis Wilder, Caltrans' deputy district director for structures construction. "The lighting will showcase the graceful arches of this impressive Dennis Smith Broncos Jersey gateway to San Diego."

The bridge was first conceived by exposition architect Bertram Goodhue as a ceremonial access to his California Quadrangle, which Brian Dawkins Jersey includes the San Diego Museum of Man's California Tower. In another New Year's present to the public, the museum will begin offering daily tours Thursday of the tower, reviving an attraction not available since 1935.

The bridge, designed by engineer Thomas B. Hunter, cost $225,155 and was funded by voter approved bonds for the expo. It is 40 feet wide, 475 feet long and up to 120 feet high.

Goodhue had originally proposed a three arch bridge similar to the Alcantara Bridge in Toledo, Spain. But Frank P. Allen Jr., director of works, proposed a seven arch, aqueduct type bridge, which he estimated at $150,000, $23,000 less than Goodhue's projection.

"When we began discussing how San Diego would commemorate the centennial, I knew we had to celebrate with more than a sheet cake on the Plaza de Panama," said Councilman Todd Gloria, who represents the park. "The three events this week, the countless exhibits planned for the park's institutions, and the investment of more than $62 million into the park so far ensure that Balboa Park's Authentic Dennis Smith Jersey history will be honored and its future will be strong."
