For some NVR / IP camera setups, it may be necessary to use an external Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switch to expand your system to the maximum number of cameras. In other cases a PoE switch can help simplify or extend the wiring for your installation.

A Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch is a dedicated device that contains multiple Ethernet ports to provide power and network communications to IP cameras. This allows a PoE switch to expand the reach of an NVR system because you can connect IP cameras to the PoE switch rather than the NVR.

The steps to connect your system using a PoE switch are as follows:

1. Connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN port on the PoE switch to your router. Connect the power cable to the PoE switch and to a power outlet or surge protector.
2. Connect IP cameras to ports 1~8 on the PoE switch using the Ethernet extension cables. The PoE switch will provide power and video transmission the same way your NVR does.

You can connect the PoE switch to your router using a Cat5E or Cat6 Ethernet cable up to 300ft (92m) in length, and you can connect the IP cameras up to 300ft (92m) from the PoE switch.
