Mayes named Rising Star Brisbane Lions finally have something to cheer about with youngster Sam Mayes winning the AFL's Rising Star nomination for Nike free 3.0 V5 12.Mayes was among the best in the Lions' loss to Fremantle on Saturday at Patersons Stadium, collecting 25 possessions - 15 kicks, 10 handballs and seven marks. But he faces a stiff opposition to win the overall Rising Star award for 2013 with the likes of Jaeger O'Meara (Gold Coast), Tom Mitchell (Sydney), Oliver Wines (Port Adelaide) and Nick Vlastuin (Richmond) considered the main contenders so far.Taken at number eight in the Nike free 3.0 V5 draft, Mayes made his AFL debut against Gold Coast in Round 3 and has continued to flourish in seven more appearances.Lions coach Michael Voss said Mayes' nomination was testament to his work ethic."From day one we've been very impressed by Sam's attitude and his approach to his training," Voss said."He's a good, level-headed young man. When you keep presenting yourself in that Nike free 3.0 V5 then people start to take notice."A former AIS-AFL Academy graduate, Mayes gained Under 18 All-Australian selection in 2011, before being named Under 18 South Australian vice-captain in 2012.The 19-year-old from Port Pirie in South Australia played North Adelaide in the SANFL in 2012.The 15th-placed Lions will search for their fourth win of the season when they host Geelong on Sunday.
