When young people got their first jobs, they may face a lot of new, confusing situations. They may find that everything is different from the way things were at school. It is also possible that they will feel uncomfortable and insecure in both professional and social situations. Eventually, they realize that university classes can’t be the only preparation for all of the different situations that arise in the working world.

Perhaps the best way to learn how to behave in the working world is to identify a worker you admire and observe his behavior. In doing so, you will be able to see what it is that you admire in this person. For example, you will observe how he acts in crisis. Perhaps even more important, you will be able to see what is his approach to day-to-day situations.

While you are observing your colleague(同事), you should be asking yourself whether his behavior is like yours and how you can learn from his responses to different situations. By watching and learning from a model, you will probably begin to identify and adopt good working habits.

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown, in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letters we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience, and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more number of words that mean something to us increases.

Great writers are those who, not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal (吸引) powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style(文风). Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar (粗俗).

Passage three

Research finds that men much more easily fall romantically in live than do women, and they fall in love much more quickly than do women. For example, in one study in which men and women were asked how early in the affair(恋爱事件) they had become aware that they were in love, 20 percent of the men said they had fallen in love before the fourth date(约会), as compared with 15 percent of the women. At the other extreme, 45 percent of the women were still not sure whether they were in love by the twentieth date, as compared with only 30 percent of the men.

Not only do men fall romantically in love more quickly than women, but they also cling(抓紧) more tightly to a dying love affaire. And they are more depressed, more lonely, and function less effectively when the relationship ends. Men find it harder to accept the fact that they are no longer loved – that the affair is over and there is nothing they can do about it. Three times as many men as women commit suicide (自杀) after a failure in love affair. Women tend to be more practical in taking steps to meet new people and make new friends.

However, women are usually described(描述) to be more romantic than men, dreaming more often about romantic fulfillment(实现). Do young women really spend more time dreaming about meeting a brave, handsome and eager admirer (the knight on the white horse) than young men spend daydreaming about their female ideal (the princess in the tower)?

In the absence(缺席) of research, one can only guess. Women do buy and read the romantic novels and magazines such as True Romance, while men tend to read Car and Driver. Women are assumed(假设) to be more interested in discussing affairs of the heart while men are traditionally expected to talk about sports, cars and business. Moreover, in songs, which are another reflection(反映) of popular culture, it is usually the woman who is described as sacrificing(牺牲) everything for the man she loves. The man, on the other hand, is described as has less eager feelings and often as runaways who brush aside tender emotions.

Yet, nearly all love songs are written by men.

Passage four

The first modern computer was built at Harvard University in 1944. It was the first machine that could automatically carry out a long list of calculations, all in the proper order. It used mechanical and electronic parts. In the years that followed, computers became much more complicated, much faster in operation, and very widely used in science and in business.

This comes about for two main reasons. Firstly, scientists and engineers needed correct answers to important and complicated problems. Say a group of engineers were building a new type of rocket engine. An important question might be: “how should each part be designed cheaply and efficiently?” There are mathematical rules for calculating shapes, pressures, stresses, and efficiency.

Other questions might be “is our basic design a good one?” or “how much of each material do we need?” Again, there are mathematical rules which can be used to answer these questions. Mathematicians could write the questions for solving problems such as these. But the amount of calculation was too great for them to carry out. The invention of the automatic computer enabled them to solve such complicated problems.

The second main reason for the development of computers is found in the world of business. Any big business had enormous quantities of records to keep, and thousands of calculations to make every week. It has records of every bit of material it buys and sells. It has records of wages and salaries to calculate and file. And probably it has to keep records of stocks of materials and production of goods. Before computers were invented, all these calculations had to be carried out, and all the records kept, by armies of accountants and clerks. Computers can do the same work more quickly and more accurately.

Passage five

It is often said that differences between people can be caused by the different times when the people were born. For example, people who were born between March 21 and April 20 are supposed to be active, daring, and strong. They like power and enjoy adventures. They think quickly and have strong wills.

On the other hand, those who were born between April 21 and May 20 are supposed to learn more slowly, but they remember what they learn. They love children, and they usually have many friends.

People born between May 21 and June 21 are bright and interesting. They like to talk, and they enjoy wearing fine clothes. Those born between June 22 and July 22, on the other hand, think deeply. They would rather hide their feelings than express them.

People who were born between July 23 and August 22 are generally proud. They are interested in many subjects, and it is interesting to hear them talk. Those born between August 23 and September 22 are said to be calm and thoughtful. They like to read and often become successful scientists.

Those who were born between September 23 and October 22 seldom become excited. They love beauty and have a great desire to learn. And those born between October 23 and November 21 are often admired because they learn quickly and can express their ideas easily.

It is said that people born between November 22 and December 21 enjoy meeting strangers, and they are able to command those around them, while people born between December 22 and January 19 have strong feelings, which they are quick to express.

People who were born between January 20 and February 18 are dreamers and they have the power to make their dreams come true. And those born between February 19 and March 20 are successful with money but they are also peaceful and kind.

These are some of the beliefs of astrologers (占星家), who think human differences are caused by the positions the sun, moon and stars.

Passage six

In the United States, there are six million more women than men. On average women live seven years longer than men. If you look at the top ten or twelve causes of death, every single one kills more men.

The reason why men die more than women partly lies with men themselves. Men smoke more than women, drink more and take more life-threatening chances. Men are killed by other men three times as often as women are. They commit suicide (自杀) at a higher rate and have more than twice as many fatal car accidents as women do.

On the other hand. Women are less likely than men to get life-threatening diseases. They seem to get everyday sickness and pain more often than men. They make more visits to the doctors, take more drugs and spend more days in bed.

When a spouse (配偶) dies, men seem to suffer more than women. They feel more miserable and are more likely to fall ill and die. A woman who loses a husband, in contrast, often has close friends with her. As a result, nearly 80 percent of the population over 65 years old and living alone are women.

But things are changing now. Men are smoking less, drinking less and eating better. The health gap between men and women is getting smaller and smaller not because women are acting like men, but because men are behaving more like women.
