Lewis and Kemoeatu were both starters, so the Panthers are very thin on depth at defensive tackle. Kemoeatu, who is coming off of Achilles surgery, and Lewis had a large option bonuses due soon.

Diggs, a source said, had a small option bonus due. Dan Connor seems like the oddson favorite to replace him in the lineup. Diggs started 46 games over the past four years at SLB for the Panthers.

Johnson started a bit last season due to the injury to starting WLB Thomas Davis.

All of these players were released largely as a result of the team trying to accommodate DE Julius Peppers' $16.683 million franchise salary of from last season. The team targeted several veterans for renegotiation just to get Peppers' salary under the 2009 salary cap.
