fact: Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition 9.0
fact: Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition 8.1
symptom: Archiving fails
symptom: ORA-16040: standby destination archivelog file is locked
symptom: Multiple archive destinations
cause: The archiving is done by two or more LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_X to the same
standby database.
fix:
Check in the view V$ARCHIVE_DEST for conflicting destinations :
SQL> select destination, binding, archiver
from v$archive_dest
where status <>'INACTIVE';
A confliction destination is for instance :
Destination 1 : standby archived by LGWR
Destination 2 : standby archived by ARCH
The archive is archived to the standby database by the LGWR and ARCH process
which is causing the conflict. Only one process can archive to the same standby
destination.
Stop the least important destination. (in the example destination 2) with
SQL> alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2=defer;
