Engineering vs. Science, Experiment vs. Modeling - Beyond dispute

What are science? Which belong to engineering then? Does modeling contribute to knowledge, and thereby an activity of science research? How about experiements then? These questions originated from an informal communication among my frindes and me about two weeks ago, and are intensified by another chatting just now. Here, I just present the evidences of my opinions according to the common scientific considerations.

Above all, arguments about which are superior to the others are unscientific and unconstructive.

Formal definitions:
Engineering is the discipline and profession of applying technical and scientific knowledge and utilizing natural laws and physical resources in order to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that realize a desired objective and meet specified criteria, while Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge" or "to know") is the effort to discover, and increase human understanding of how the physical world works. Through controlled methods, scientists use observable physical evidence of natural phenomena to collect data, and analyze this information to explain what and how things work.

Scientific modelling is the process of generating abstract, conceptual, graphical and or mathematical models. Science offers a growing collection of methods, techniques and theory about all kinds of specialized scientific modelling. In scientific inquiry, an experiment (Latin: ex- periri, "to try out") is a method of investigating particular types of research questions or solving particular types of problems. The experiment is a cornerstone in the empirical approach to acquiring deeper knowledge about the world and is used in both natural sciences as well as in social sciences.

My opinions:
Based on the defintion of scientific modelling, it is definitely part of science research activities, because modeling provides abstract descriptions and cognitive conclusions of the world, which is a kind of knowledge. The experiment operations are processes to try this knowledge out, aiming to validate and verify these human cognitions. Bascially, models are knowledge and knowledge is collection of models which describe the world after human's mental processs. However, experiments are not necessary to know the world, although they are paramount for us to validate our knowledge.

My comments about the discussions:
As a researcher or scientist, the most basical view of the world, including one's work, is to jump the limitation of common people's thinking patterns and to hold the principles of seeing both sides of a coin. Even though I dont agree with your ideas or opinions, I hold the scientifc rules to listen to you and follow you. That is the best method to detect mistakes or defects in your thinking. A real scientist does not act as a paranoia, who insists his thinking and never take a try from the other side.

BTW: Computational physics is the study and implementation of numerical algorithms in order to solve problems in physics for which a quantitative theory already exists. It is often regarded as a subdiscipline of theoretical physics but some consider it an intermediate branch between theoretical and experimental physics.
