A Taste of American: Thanksgiving Dinner (1/2)
November 23th, 2006
The one meal I look forward to most each year is, without a doubt, thanksgiving dinner. The annual feast abounds with fragrances and flavors that convey warmth and tradition. No other meal is as essentially American as this one.
Families gather to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner on the fourth Thursday of November. The feasting often begins in the afternoon and may continue for hours. A glistening, golden-brown turkey is the meal's traditional centerpiece. But also crowding the dinner table are numerous other delectable American dishes and desserts.
In my home, the meal officially begins with the carving of the turkey. As slices of succulent meat are cut from the bird, my stomach growls with anticipation. Nothing tastes quite like turkey slowly roasted for hours.
Tart cranberry sauce and savory stuffing almost always accompany the turkey. The stuffing made with breadcrumbs and herbs, is usually cooked inside the bird. As the turkey slowly roasts, the stuffing soaks up the bird's delicious juices.
Although stuffing and cranberry sauce are seldom eaten other times of the year, they are simply a Thanksgiving must.
