The Mid-Autumn Festival , also known as the Lantern Festival, Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a festival celebrated by the Chinese and East Asian people. It is the second most important Chinese festival after the Lunar New Year.中秋节，又被称之为灯笼节，月饼节，是中国和东亚的传统节日。是仅次春节的第二大节日。

Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. This year, it falls on October 1.  On this day, the Chinese believe that the moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn.阴历每年8月15就是中秋节，今年的中秋节正好是阳历的10月1号。这一天，人们认为月亮最大，也最圆，时间恰逢秋收时节。

There are also some interesting legends about this festival. 中秋节的起源
The Chinese have celebrated the harvest during the autumn full moon since the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE). For the Baiyue peoples, the harvest time commemorated the dragon who brought rain for the crops. The celebration as a festival only started to gain popularity during the early Tang dynasty (618–907 CE). One legend explains that Emperor Xuanzong of Tang started to hold formal celebrations in his palace after having explored the Moon-Palace. The term mid-autumn (中秋) first appeared in Rites of Zhou, a written collection of rituals of the Western Zhou dynasty (1046–771 BCE). As for the royal court, it was dedicated to the goddess Taiyinxingjun (太陰星君 Tàiyīn xīng jūn). And current still in Taoism and Chinese folk religion. 自商代（约公元前1600-1046年）起，中国人就在中秋满月之时庆祝每年的丰收。对于百越人来说，丰收期是为了纪念给庄稼带来雨水的龙。作为一种节日，庆祝活动在初唐（公元618-907年）才开始流行起来。一个传说解释说，唐玄宗在游览了月宫之后，开始在他的宫殿里举行正式的庆祝活动。中秋这个词最早出现在西周（公元前1046-771年）的《周礼》中。至于皇家宫廷，它是献给太阴行军的。而目前仍存在道教和中国民间宗教中。
