dashboard 4.0 cannot connect a prompt to spreadsheet in query browser

Bex  variables grayed out in query browser ( dashboards 4.0 sp4)

I have connected to a bex query having characteristic variables and i see the variables are grayed out in query  browser

How do i send the values back to bex query .. well I dont see the option of the sending the values back to bex without variables  where as in netweaver BW connection i can use the filters and as well as variables. ) 

Any suggestions     would be really appreciated or is query browser connections  used for limited conditions ?  do i have to move to Net weaver BW connection .

You cannot pass values from Excel to a BEx-variable prompt. The only way you can send values to your BEx-variable, is by using the Query Prompt Selector. This will let users select values for the object that your variable refers to.

 

However, it is not possible to pass values to the Query Prompt Selector and then make it process those values as if a user interacted with the component. It does have an option to bind to Excel called "Insert Selected Items", but unfortunately this options does not work like it does for e.g. the Combo-box: the cell you bind to the "Insert Selected Items" option for the Query Prompt Selector, will display whatever is selected in the compnent. It does NOT read and take selections from this cell...

 

So, in conclusion, you cannot pass values from Excel to BEx variables. You can only use the Query Prompt Selector and cannot pass values to it.

 

...I did some testing because I simply could not believe that the option to bind a BEx-variable to a cell in Excel has disappeared, but indeed it has! I can make it work for formula variables, but anything else requires the use of the Query Prompt Selector.
