“Educated,” by Tara Westover (Random House). I never thought I’d relate to a story about growing up in a Mormon survivalist household, but Tara Westover is such a good writer that she got me to reflect on my own life while reading about her extreme childhood.

摩门教

摩门教的正式名称是“耶稣基督后期圣徒教会”。一般指在美国犹他州一带的后期圣徒运动宗派，主要是因为大多数的后期圣徒运动宗派和信徒都在这个地区。教会总部在美国犹他州盐湖城。根据 2014 年教会公布的数字，教会有 1500 多万名教友，当中约 639 万人在美国居住，是美国第四大宗教团体，也是目前世界上最大的新兴宗教。

Theranos

Theranos 是一家血液检测公司，由伊莉莎白·霍尔姆斯（Elizabeth Holmes）于2003 年创立。在2013 年，Theranos 开始推出自己的血液检测产品：一款叫做 nanotainers 的血液采集设备和一款叫做 miniLab 的血液诊断检测设备。与传统的血液检测动辄数百美元的花费相比，Theranos 最低只需要 2.99 美元。不仅如此，Theranos 以“告别可怕的针头和采血试管”为口号，宣称不用针头，只需刺破手指获取几滴血便可以完成在专业医疗实验室内进行的多达 240 项医疗检查，从胆固醇到癌症几乎都能检测。可惜，自 2015 年被曝出该公司血液检测作假之后，这家估值曾高达 90 亿美元的公司不得不面临各种审查以及民事、刑事诉讼。最终，在今年三月，Theranos 高管被美国证券交易委员会以民事欺诈罪起诉，六月遭到美国司法部刑事指控，这场上演了三年的“硅谷大戏”最终落下帷幕。
