ArcMap (ArcInfo) - How to Perform a Network Trace over a Geometric Network in a Geodatabase

Stream network modeling is an important task for many communities, as well as for many organizations. Checking what streams flow to a given point is an important aspect of network modeling. For example, if you detect a chemical or pollutant in the stream at a given point you may wish to determine which streams flow down to that point so that you can narrow your search for the source of the chemical.

Create the Geodatabase

You can download the personal geodatabase from the ESRI Canada website by clicking here , or you can create one following the steps outlined in How to Define a Simple Stream Network in a Geodatabase, located online at: http://www.esricanada.com/english/support/get_tech/arcgis/Geodatabase_network.asp

For this example create an additional feature class called SourcesSinks within the geodatabase. This feature class will store the source and sink information for the geometric network. Use the same method as used to create the streams, except select ESRI Simple Junction Feature from the top drop down box, and check off the check box at the bottom indicating that this feature class will store source or sink information.

Click Next through all of the dialogs taking all of the default values. You could add weights and other fields to this feature class, however we will use the defaults for this example.

At the end of the process you should have a geodatabase entitled StreamNetwork , a feature dataset entitled Streams , and four feature classes: SourcesSinks , which is a point feature class; Streams , which is a line feature class; Streams_Net , which is your geometric network; and Streams_Net_Junctions , a point feature class which will store the junction information from the network.

Creating Network Features

  1. Open ArcMap , click the Add Data button, and add the Streams_Net feature class. This will add the three other feature classes, and it will ensure that it brings in the relationships between them.
  2. Add the Editor Tool Bar if you have not, and click Start Editing , add the Utility Network Analyst tool bar as well. Clicking on the View Menu and selecting the ToolBars item, and clicking on the desired items can do this.
  3. Add lines to your Streams feature class to form a stream network.
  4. Select as your target , the SourcesSinks layer.
  5. Set your snapping options to be the ends of the Streams feature class.

  6. Digitize a point at the very end of all of the lines.

  7. Select the point at the end of the stream network (in this example the point on the far right), and open the attribute table for the SourcesSinks feature class. Set the Ancillary role property to Sink , and ensure that all of the other records are set to None .
  8. Close the attribute table.

At this point you have created a stream network and set the sink for the network. All water will flow through the network to the sink.

Establish Flow

  1. From the Utility Network Analyst toolbar click the flow button .
This will establish the flow direction. Click on the Flow drop down arrow and click Display Arrows . Your screen should now show arrows on the stream lines indicating the flow direction of the network.
  2. Click Stop Editing on the Editor toolbar and save your edits, and now you are ready to perform a trace on the network.

Perform Trace

  1. Click the trace tool .  This is the tool that looks like a blue flag and select from the drop down select the Add Edge Flag Tool.
  2. Select this tool and add a flag near the base of your network, a green box will appear.

  3. Click the drop down box for the Trace Task , and select Trace Upstream . You have now selected the point where you "found" the pollutant in the stream, and told the Utility Network Analyst you would like to find all the upstream reaches where this pollutant may have entered the stream.
  4. Click on the Analysis drop down menu, and select Options . Click on the Results Tab, and check off Draw individual elements of complex edges . Click OK .

  5. Click the Solve button , which is the blue button on the far right hand side of the toolbar. You should see the results of the trace.
You will note that the trace tool does not stop exactly at the flag but continues to the one junction below, take this into account during your analysis.
