妙语佳句，活学活用

1. on the slate

Slate 本指“石板”，过去在欧洲，没有引进纸以前，人们是把事情记在石板上的。后来就发展出了这个表达 on the slate，表示“记在帐上”，或者“在记录上”。我们来看个例子：I've no change, could you put these eggs on the slate? 我没零钱, 能把这些蛋钱记在帐上吗?

这 个片语有两个常用意思，一个是“despite the opposition of, notwithstanding虽然，尽管，不顾（相反的情况）”，比如：In the face of published statistics, they insist there is no flu epidemic. 他们不顾已被发布的统计结果，仍然坚持没有流行感冒。

In the face of 的另一个常用意思是“面对”，比如：It is hard for brokers to be cheerful in the face of a falling stock market. 面对股市狂跌，经纪人们可难笑得出。

6. avoid a scene

直 译为“回避某一场面”，这里的意思是“避免某种场面出现”，比如吵闹、大家什么的。我们来看个例子：David wanted to return the insult, but he bit his lip in order to avoid a scene. 戴维本想对此侮辱进行报复，但他还是忍住了，免得当众吵闹。
