Learning Linux(6): Programming with shell

shell program file must start with "#! /bin/bash",  which means the program that will execute this file.

'#'  is the beginning of a commented line in shell program.

After creating the file, we must use the command:  'chmod u+x <filename> '  to change the program file into executable file.

About the quote:

$VAR_NAME works fine in double quote (" "), but not in single quotes (' ');

p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }

  1. use “$#” to get the the number of parameter passed

  2. $1, $2, $3..... represent the first, the second, the third.... parameter value.

  3. $*: list all parameters with the seperation of IFS

  4. use return 0 or return 1; in the function to return a value.

  5. : runs faster than true, because it is a build-in command

  6. use unset to delete variables.

  7. Use double quotes to specify name pattern when using find command
