1.Tableau Desktop
Backbone of product offering,Use Tableau Desktop to create your workbooks
2.Tableau Server
A secured intrant portal where users can easily publish and share their Tableau Workbooks by simply providing a link to a workbook. Does not require .Tableau Desktop to consume the information ,just a browser.
3.Tableau Reader
Free tool that allows you to open,but not edit Tableau Workbooks. You can only "read" what others have created.
4. Tableau Online
Cloud based "Tableau Server" solution. Tableau will host your server, enabling you to easily scale and publish content right out the gate.
Key Terminology
- Tableau Workbook(.TWB)
Created when you save your workbook in Tableau Desktop
Contains the data connection information
Workbooks are made up of : Worksheet(s) 、Dashboard(s)、Story(s)
- Tableau Packaged Worbook(.TWBX)
Contains all of your visualizations, connection information, and data
- Tableau Data Extract(.TDE)
Contains a snapshot of data and serves as the datasource to build from.
- Dimension
What you are looking to calculate and report on(eg.Year, State)
- Measure
The actual metric you are looking to analyze (e.g. Quantity Sold, Net Sales)
