1, Helmholtz Centre:        KIT

Research Field:         Coherent X-ray Diffractive Imaging

Position:        PhD Student x

Department/Supervising scientist:   ISS/ A.A. Minkevich and T. Baumbach

Research Area:

Phase retrieval algorithm development for strain analysis in crystals

This doctoral position is aimed at developing inverse procedures applied to X-ray Diffraction patterns. X-ray diffraction from a strained semiconductor crystal yield highly detailed information about local strain via the interference pattern in reciprocal space. By reconstruction of such pattern the resolution in nm range is expected. Recently several successful reconstructions of strain field were published. The further research, however, is highly required since the convergence of the reconstruction algorithm is not stable in the presence of high strain and the related problems are not clearly understood. The research of the general applicability of the method to different types of structures will be performed during this doctoral study.

Specific Requirements:

Diploma or Master in Mathematics, Computer Science or Physics.

Understanding of principles of programming. Good computational skills.

Work Place:        ISS, ANKA

Earliest Start:         October 2011

Language Course:        Available at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

2,Helmholtz Centre:        KIT

Research Field:        Hard X-ray microscopy: X-ray Micrscopy and Quality Accurance of optical components (MiQA)

Position:        PhD Student x

Department/Supervising scientist: ISS/Venera Altapova and T.Baumbach

Research Area:

Hard X-rays are an attractive probe for microscopic imaging, due to their large penetration depth in matter that allows one to investigate the interior of a specimen by a variety of contrast mechanisms such as absorption, phase-contrast, diffraction and fluorescence analysis. By combining Tomographic techniques and X-ray optical components, the three-dimensional inner structure of a specimen can be reconstructed from the image with a spatial resolution on the scale of 50 to 100nm. This makes the technique especially attractive for imaging of bio-medical specimens and applications in microsystem technologies over material sciences.

The goals of this thesis are:

1)        To develop a simulation tool for a wavefront propagation through X-ray optical components;

2)        Based on the simulation tool to improve design and optical efficiency of X-ray optics, therefore developing and improving microscopy imaging methods;

3)        Verification of X-ray optics and imaging methods via experiments at ANKA Microscopy station.

Specific Requirements:

Diploma or master thesis in physics, electrical engineering or material science

Work Place:         ANKA and/or ESRF

Earliest Start:          Sept. 2011

Language Course:        Available at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Further Information:         Venera Altapova, Tilo Baumbach (ISS)

Address for application: ISS/ANKA, KIT (Mail to anne.stoesser@kit.edu)
