Modeling and Simulation of Matrix Converter
Abstract : This paper discusses the modeling and simulation of matrix converter. Two models of matrix converter are presented: one is based on indirect space vector modulation and the other is based on power balance equation. The basis of these two models is given and the process on modeling is introduced in details. The results of simulations developed for different researches reveal that different model may be suitable for different purpose, thus the model should be chosen different carefully. Some details and tricks in modeling are also introduced which give a reference for further research.

1 Introduction
The matrix converter (MC) has been an attractive topic in power electronics during the past two decades. The biggest difference with traditional topologies is the employment of bidirectional switch , so that it offers an all silicon solution for AC-AC power conversion and permit the regenerate energy back to the supply. It draws sinusoidal input currents from grid and unity displacement factor can be arranged at the supply side irrespective of the load[1-2]. Further more, the size of the power circuit has the potential to be reduced in comparison to conventional topologies as there are no large passive components needed to store energy. This could be a big advantage especially where high temperature silicon carbide devices are utilized[3].
The performance of matrix converter has been discussed in different aspect in different ways[4-10]. To some extend, the behavior of a matrix converter can be predicted by analytical approaches. But the non-linear nature of power switching converters makes an exact analytical solution almost impossible. For this reason, numerical simulations must be carried out to give a detailed understanding of the matrix converter.
Some simulation studies have been reported in. Most of them are developed for discussing the modulation strategies and the models are built up to verify the valid of the strategies. Thus the effects of non-ideal components and those results from digital implementation of modulation strategy are usually ignored. In the research of MC stability[9-10], however, it is found that some factors that is easier to be ignored in modeling may lead to different results, which is necessary to pay attention in MC further research. This paper introduces two models that had been used in stability research. One is very simple and the other one is complex. Simulation waveforms are presented to illustrate the different performance of these two models. Principles in choosing a proper model are introduced and the importance omce of applying different model for different purpose is stressed. A few skills and tricks are also mentioned in the paper.
