Templates:Templates are preset schemas for Sitecore content items

Content:

1. Content is created based on predefined templates
2. A content instance of a template is called an item
3. Items are stored in a database
4. Items are edited in the Master database
5. Publishing copies items from the Master to a publishing target(e.g. Web database)
6. Content is item based ,not page based.Item can become a page----Item+Presentation=render page,Item-Presentation=error page
7. Information Architecture:

• • • Content tree mirrors site structure
    • Place pages under the site's home
    • Tree structure impact URLs
    • Set insert options
    • Limit number of children
    • Limit number of versions
      

Presentation

1. A layout consist of:A code file on the file system;A layout definition item--Path field,links the code file to the definition item.
2. A layout is required to view an item as a web page;Layouts are assigned to an item's Presentation Details(two ways)

    • Standard values of a template

Summary

• Data templates define the type of item and consist of fields,field type,and field sections
• All content is based on data templates
• All items are not pages and items that are pages are configured for viewing in the browser using the Presentation Details setting
• Layouts and components such as View Renderings and Controller Renderings are assigned to an item's Presentation Details

Note:All items are not pages .Only items with Presentation Details are pages. The Presentation Details setting makes an item viewable as a page in the browser. The Presentation Details setting can include layouts and components
