Chinese mandarin and Chinese Characters have long been taken as the most difficult language and characters to teach and to learn in the world.

Since modern times, the poverty and weakness of China led to the almost abolishment of the research on Chinese characters as well as the educational traditions and meanwhile imitating western linguistic theories, especially Saussure’s General Linguistics, the set of formula system on the base of phonetic symbols, became the basic principle to instruct Chinese teaching. It is the application of these foreign linguistic theories that make Chinese mandarin and Chinese Characters the most difficult to teach and to learn in the world.

早在两千多年前,中国文字学家就认识到语言和文字的区别,即文字本身就不是记录语言的符号,而是直接表意。汉字并不是拼音文字,是一种非形态的、以形表意的文字体系,汉字的形体不表示汉语的语音。1967年,法国哲学家雅克.德里达,以及英国哲学家哈里斯,对传统的“普通语言学”提出质疑,并确立了语言和文字两者间的严格界限。

As early as more than 2000 years ago, Chinese experts on characters realized the difference between language and characters, namely, character is a direct expression more than a symbol to record language. Character is a non-formula character system with its form expressing its meaning not the phonetic sound , totally different from Pinyin. In 1967, Jacques Derrida, a French philosopher, together with Harris, an English philosopher, brought challenge to the traditional “General Linguistics”, and set up a strict limit between language and characters.

20世纪90年代以来,国内诸多有识之士开始系统反思。其中,以北京语言大学张朋朋教授提出的“语文分开,语先文后,语文互进,集中识字”教学法,经过实践,最为有效。事实证明,汉语和英语一样易教易学,中文则相对于英文、法文更容易掌握。

Since the 1990s, a number of scholars have begun with systematic reflection. The teaching methodology of “separating the teaching of Chinese language listening and speaking from Chinese characters reading and writing; Chinese language listening and speaking prior to Chinese characters reading and writing; Chinese language listening and speaking interact with Chinese characters reading and writing; characters intensive”, proposed by Zhang Pengpeng, professor of Beijing Language University, is the most effective through practice. It turns out that Chinese is as easy as English to teach and to learn and easier to master in comparison with English and French.

即将听说汉语普通话和读写汉字按照各自的规律分开学习,先掌握部分听说汉语普通话再开始学习汉字识读写,学习听说汉语普通话的同时注意建立拼音与汉字的联系并初步学习,最后开始单独的集中学习中文汉字(此时不再学习拼音)。在整个学习过程中,力争使用高新技术手段再造一个真实的语言、文字学习环境。

Research indicates that the traditional theory of “character is the symbol to record language” is incorrect. It is recording that records the oral communication among Chinese people. Therefore, try to take use of hi-tech means to reconstruct every Chinese language communication situation and restore the recording to make learners learn sentences intensively, especially the commonly used Chinese sentences and master Chinese language naturally in situations similar to the real. The usage of hi-tech means makes “language situation teaching” come true and Chinese teaching resumed.

Chinese characters are composed by limited components and rules exist among components, and limited characters compose unlimited words. If you know the pronunciation of characters, you can read the words composed by them. Classify the components, begin learning with the components and single characters, and then the frequently used characters, and the lecture to make learners comprehend by analogy. At the same time, take use of hi-tech means to simulate scientifically the authentic writing environment of “paper and pen” to help learners study first and then practise, and put what they have learnt into practice through handwriting input. It is the usage of hi-tech means that integrates the teaching, recognizing, reading, and writing of Chinese characters together.
