The paper presents interesting work and results and should make a useful paper. The following comments and suggestions are made for the author to improve the clarity of the paper prior to resubmission of the paper.

1. The keywords do not represent the main concept of the paper. Some parameters such as coeffificent of consolidation should be included.

2. In the introduction, the author should clarify why they did this research, i.e. what was unclear and how important it is, which made them do their research to clarify it.

3. Saturation of the samples affects the coeffificent of consolidation. Was ther degree of saturation measured? If so how? This should be explained in the paper.

4. Include the physical properties of the clay investigated.

5. A theoretical solution for derivation of Equation 8 are used but the coefficient of permeability are used from an empirical equation?

6. Figure captions should summarize the figure topic/content, rather than a comment on the trends shown in the figures.

7. In Figs 4 and 7 and others, plots are function of effective stress, but it is not shown on these figures what is the effective stress.

8. The experimental work is on one clay - can the results apply to all types of soils??

9. In the theoritical part of the paper, please make sure that derivation of every formula is correct, clear, and easy to follow.

10. Please compare your findings with Terzaghi's theory and the other published opinions. The findings should appear in the Abstract, Discussion of the results, and in the conclusions. The findings in these sections should be similar.

11. The grammer of the paper should be critically reviewed and improved. Please make sure that the manuscript is free of typo errors & incomplete/incorrect sentences. Also please use the proper tenses, e.g. do not use the future tense when you talk about comparisons that you already made, or your findings.
