gdm is the default displaymanager, replace if you've changed it to something else.

I'm using xdm. The command "sudo /etc/init.d/xdm restart" shuts down X completely - all I want to do is to return to the xdm login screen. The reason I'm looking for a command is because I want to be able to leave a script running and have it log me off when it's finished.
