Configuring 9iDS Net8 to connect to a remote database

If you will be connecting to a remote Oracle database (over a network), then you will need to congiure Oracle Net8. Gather the settings about the Oracle server such as host name, IP address, Oracle Service Name and/or SID and port number (1521 is the usual default). Run the Net Configuration Assistant in the Programs -> Oracle - 9iDSHome -> Configuration and Migration Tools folder.

For example even if you will be connecting to Oracle9i database on your own computer, you will need to configure a Net Services Name under 9iDS to point to the Oracle9i database. Befor eyou start, make sure you understand which Oracle Home was used to install your database and which was used to install your 9iDS.

First make sure you have a localhost listener running for your Oracle9i Database. This can be done in several steps. First, make sure the Windows Services related to the oracle database and Listener are running. Within the Windows Control Panel, go to "Administrative Tools" and then run the "Services". You shoul dhave at least two services running as shown below:

Note that your Service names may be slightly different depending on your preferneces when you installed the database.

OracleserviceORCL is the database instance named ORCL

OracleOrahome90TNSListener is the TNS Listener service for the database installed in the Oracle home named "OraHome90".

To double check that things are configured properly, run the Oracle Enterprise Manager Console - in the Standalone mode.

Make sure you can connect to the local database (named "orcl" in this example).

Once you are sure your Oracle9i Database has the listener running, then run the Net Configuration Assistant under the Programs -> Oracle - 9iDSHome -> Configuration and Migration Tools folder.

Select the "Local Net Service Name" as shown below:

Then click Next.

Choose "Add" as shown below and click the Next button:

Choose "Oracle8i or later Database" and click the Next button.

Type in the Service Name you gave the oracle9i Database when you installed it. The default is almost always "orcl".

Choose the TCP Protocol and click the Next button.

Since the database is running on your own PC, you can use the "localhost" as the host name. If this does not work, you can also try the localhost IP address of 127.0.0.1.

Use the default port of 1521 unless you changed this when you installed your database.

You may choose to perform. a test at this point (not shown here).

As a final step, give the new net service name (this will be used in the "Database" field in 9iDS Forms or Reports when you first log in).

From this point on, just choose "No" to stop configuring Net Service Names and then Finish to exit out of the Net Configuration Assistant.

Installing the JInitiator

Another step you will need to take (although it can be handled automatically), is to install Oralce's JInititor. Look for a file called jinit.exe in your 9iDS Home (under directory jinit). Jinit is a plugin Java runtime environment for MS IE and Netscape. It needs to be installed before you can view any forms or reports. It is best if you install this before beginning any development in 9iDS. Make sure you re-start your web browser prior to running any forms or reports.

Running the OC4J Instance

Before running a form. or a report you have created, you will need to run the OC4J service. By default, this runs on port 8888 on your local machine. If you have any other servers using that port, you will have to change the OC4J's default port.
