When the next century is coming,the worldwide growth and expansion of the Internet may well be one of the very important events in the world. This paper introduces the first nationwide academic network in China: China Education and Research Network. Its background and significance are presented. The objec tives and stategy of CERNET are bescribed. This paper also gives its current state and technical characteristic, and discusses its prospects in the future.
