The method involves detecting radiation which is adjusted against a fiber stream (FS) and radiation supplied and/or transferred from the fiber stream by sensors (27). A set of images of fiber stream parts that is provided in detecting areas of the sensors is produced based on the detected radiation to determine whether a discrepancy is concluded in the detected radiation within the images in the presence of dirt within the appropriate fiber stream parts. A measurement reading is produced based on the determination and is evaluated statistically. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for detecting dirt in a fiber stream (2) a method for calibrating sensors (3) a textile machine comprising a dirt detecting device.
