之前很多同学问过我，while 好像用法挺多的，该怎么处理？

今天，我们就来详细总结一下while 的几种常见用法。

(1)while 引导时间状语从句，意思是 “当...时候”

while 最常见的用法是引导状语从句，表示“当...时候”。注意，while 后面的谓语动词一般为延续性动词，表示这个动作会延续一段时间。

比如：

While she was watching TV, she fell asleep. 她看电视看睡着了。

While they were busy playing their games, the couch caught on fire. 当他们忙着打游戏的时候，沙发起火了。

这种用法最简单，大家应该都没有问题。

(2)while 在很多句子当中，可以翻译为：与此同时。

举例1:

Today, professors routinely treat the progressive interpretation of history and progressive public policy as the proper subject of study while portraying conservative or classical liberal ideas — such as freemarkets and self-reliance— as falling outside the boundaries of routine, and sometimes legitimate, intellectual investigation. 举例2:

Social media allows users to experience news events more intimately and immediately while also permitting them to re-share news as a projection of their values and interests.

社交媒体可以让用户更亲密、更即时地体验新闻事件，同时也允许用户将新闻作为自己价值观和兴趣的投射进行再分享。

举例3:

Thus the development of new plant breeds will become very much harder while the judgement(判决) also threatens to rob Europe of the lead its scientists could take in feeding the planet.

因此，植物新品种的开发将变得非常困难，而判决也有可能使欧洲失去其科学家在养活地球方面的领先地位。

上面三个句子当中的while，都翻译成“当...时候”，“与此同时” 即可。

(3)while 在句首时，可以引导让步状语从句，意思是“尽管...”

举例1:

While polls show Britons rate “the countryside” alongside the royal family, Shakespeare and the National Health Service (NHS) as what makes them proudest of their country, this has limited political support.(2016年真题)

尽管民调显示，英国人将 "乡村 "与皇室、莎士比亚和国民健康服务(NHS)并列评为他们国家最引以为傲的元素，但这种观点在政治上的支持力度有限。

举例2:

While traditional “paid” media – such as television commercials and print advertisements – still play a major role, companies today can exploit many alternative forms of media.(2011 真题)

虽然传统的 "付费 "媒体--如电视广告和平面广告--仍然发挥着重要作用，但今天的公司可以利用许多其他形式的媒体。

(4)while 还可以引导并列句，表示前后形成一种对比，可以翻译为 “而...”

举例1:

She loves playing piano, while her sister is only interested in guitar. 她喜欢弹钢琴，而她的姐姐(妹妹)只对吉他感兴趣。

举例2:

Most archaeological sites have been located by means of careful searching, while many others have been discovered by accident. (2014年真题)

大部分的考古遗址都是通过仔细寻找的方式找到的，而也有很多是意外发现的。
