GOAL
o How to check if redo transfer compression is used?
SOLUTION
As per
Note 729551.1: Redo Transport Compression in a Data Guard Environment
is available since 11gR1.
The COMPRESSION attribute is used to specify whether redo data is compressed before transmission to a redo transport destination.
This is one of the attribute set in the log_archive_dest_2 (in the primary database)
If broker is enabled, we should not set the log_archive_dest_2 directly. Has to set through the broker configuration tool (dgmgrl)
The property need to set is RedoCompression.
Details on how to set the above attributes by sqlplus or dgmgrl can refer to the abovementioned note.
The redo transport should use the compression mode, but the neither alert log or tracefile, there is no indication of what is the happening.
If set the log_archive_trace to level 16, should show the following in the tracefile.
SQL> alter system set log_archive_trace=16;
or
DGMGRL> edit database 'db_unique_name' set property LogArchiveTrace'=16;
where the 'db_unique_name' is the primary database name.
Here is the extraction from the tracefile.

RTC: Compression ratio for this I/O is 82%

From the _tt00_.trc, it indicates that RTC is enabled, and the ratio and actual compressed bytes used.
