A special distillation problem is encountered when the boiling point of the material is so high that the substance decomposes at its atmospheric boiling point or the vaporization temperature cannot easily be reached by steam heat. To distill such a material, either to free it from nonvolatile impurities or to separate it into fractions of differing boiling point, the distillation temperature must be lowered to a point where the liquid can be vaporized without reaching excessive temperatures. One method of accomplishing this is to operate under a vacuum.

In continuous processes the reactants are fed to the reactor and the products withdrawn continuously; the reactor operates under steady-state conditions. Continuous production will normally give lower production costs than batch production, but lacks the flexibility of batch production. Continuous reactors will usually be selected for large-scale production. Processes that do not fit the definition of batch or continuous are often referred to as semi-continuous or semi-batch. Different modes of production with continuous production and batch production called semi-continuous or semi-batch production. In the semi-batch reactor, some reactants are added with the reaction, while some products were removed. Semi-continuous process is generally viewed as a cyclical process.
