HONOR TESTERS’VOIVE

  • SCREEN

    Matt

I know I’ve seen a lot of debating on here about the display but having used both the 6x and now the 7x in my opinion the 7x has the better display. To me the display is much clearer and the colors pop more. The 2160x1080 display is very crisp, clear and looks gorgeous. This is the first time I have used a device with the 18:9 aspect ratio and I wasn’t sure how I’d like it but after using it, it’s going to be difficult to ever go back. Being able to reach the entire way across the screen and still have a big display is great. The phone gives you the option of stretching each app to the edges of the screen. This can be done individually by opening the app or in the settings menu where each app can be selected to be stretched automatically. During my time I never encountered any touch sensitivity issues or missed touches from the phone. All touches were instantly recognized and accurate. Overall I am very happy with the display on the 7x.

    Rick

I absolutely love the new trend with the 18:9 ratio displays. This phone really makes great use of that front space. Very small bezels and perfect ratio. Also love the fact that the side bezels are not too small, or have a curved screen, where my fingers constantly touch the screen accidentally (yes, I'm looking at you former love of mine, Sammy S7 Edge). The screen is bright, colors are vibrant, and I was thoroughly impressed. Video viewing was nice as was normal operations.

    Ryan

The screen on the 7x is great as well. Very bright, vibrant and clear. I compared it to a few other phones and its one of the best I’ve seen.

  • CAMERA

    Chuck

Most of mine are all indoor shots playing around with the different settings. Overall I was very impressed by just how many options and settings are available to you. And for a phone under $200, I am happy with the results.

    Matt

This is one area I spend a lot of time using on a phone and it’s an area that Honor excels at. I’ve become a huge fan of their software and different modes. There is a ton of options to choose in the camera app. There is the signature: wide aperture mode, moving photo, portrait mode, pro photo, pro video, HDR, panorama, light painting which is really cool, time lapse, slo-mo, effects which is like a Snapchat filter, good food and audio note along with a long list of filters. My favorite mode is wide aperture. It gives photos a very professional look to them and after the photo is taken you can go back and readjust the focus point. I was very happy with all the photos I took with the 7x. All the photos showed good color and were very clear. I will say it did take a few extra seconds to get it to focus on occasion and sometimes it would focus on the wrong object when using the wide aperture mode and portrait mode also took a little while to focus in. Once I got it focused though I was happy with the results. Video also turned out very good but it can get shaky due to the lack of OIS. However that feature isn’t something I would expect on a device that is less than $200. As it is video is very clear and crisp even if it is a little shaky. As long as you’re not expecting this phone to take pictures like a Pixel 2 or a Mate 10 I think you’ll be more than satisfied with the Honor 7x.

    Rick

I used a few features, and trust me, if features is what you want, and options and settings is something you value, then Honor takes care of you. Their camera has all the bells and whistles you could hope for, from a flagship. Pro Mode, HDR, Manual adjustments, Time Lapse, etc. No OIS, but I have never seen that as a "must have". I guess it all depends on what you are using your camera for, of course. Personally I have always been very impressed with Honor’s cameras. Honor delivers exceptional results with their cameras. In the industry. This camera is good. It's nice. It's not a flagship. With that said, for a $200 phone, brand new...Much better than you would expect for the money.

    Ryan

The cameras on the 7x are awesome. The different features that have been built into the stock camera app are amazing, allowing you to create some great photos! I know it doesn't have OIS which some have complained about, but how often do you really need it? You can buy a 7x and a handheld phone gimbal for cheaper than any other phone with OIS and get way better video.

  • PERFORMANCE

    Matt

When I first turned the phone on I was greated with the same EMUI that I became familiar with on my 6x. It started quickly and it was easy to transfer my apps and data over from my primary phone. The phone shipped with EMUI 5.1 and Android 7.0 but is supposed to be updated to Android 8.0 shortly. With the Kirin 659 and 3gb of ram it is very snappy.

I found the fingerprint scanner to be very quick and responsive.

    Screen brightness is great too!

One of my favorite things about the phone is the battery life! I don't consider myself to be a power user but I am on my phone quite a bit during the day. More than once I ended the day with around 40% battery left.

    Rick

The 7x offers great performance from its Kirin chipset. It flies through day to day tasks such as: switching apps, running the camera and watching videos. Very rarely did I encounter a stutter in performance. Even heavy 3D games it handled very well. Playing Beach Buggy Blitz had no effect on performance at all and the game ran as smooth as can be. For it’s price tho the 7x certainly offers great performance.

EMUI certainly seems to be a love it or hate it affair but I fall under the first category. The app drawer is finally enabled from the get go. There is a ton of customization options built into it and it can be customized to your liking. The settings menu is set up perfect and nothing is hidden in a strange place. It was kind of disappointing that it didn’t ship with the latest version that’s based on Oreo but Honor has said that it’s coming shortly so that’s something to look forward to. It’s difficult to go through all the features that EMUI has but it is definitely a feature packed skin and it’s very customizable. Typically I install Nova Launcher but when using a Huawei/Honor device I leave well enough alone.

Cell reception and call quality. During my test period I used the 7x on AT&T network and experienced excellent results. I never dropped a call the entire time I had the phone and all calls were crystal clear. Text messaging worked great and I never missed a text. Using the 7x as an actual phone produced good results and I was pleased with it.

Much like the 6x before it, the 7x has an incredible battery life. Even with heavy use I was able to make it through the day with more than 30% left. I was able to consistently get 7 hours of SOT which is extremely good. This was with the brightness set to auto the entire day. Even with gaming and watching videos I was able to make it through the day with ease. Standby time is also excellent. I would often charge the device in the evening and unplug before I went to bed and it would only drop 1 or 2 percent. The only thing I can complain about is the lack of fast charge.

    Rick

Not as quick as a 4gb RAM phone. This is not a flagship. But, I only noticed lag or issues a couple times and was always doing something memory and processes intensive, at the time.

I can honestly say that this is a good phone. But, for the money... well, it's one of the best, if not the best.

People can talk all the trash they want about EMUI, but I dismiss this as BS. I can only guess that most of the hate comes from people that have not given it a chance. Personally, I prefer it to plain old vanilla android insert gasps from android purists here). AOSP is plain. I'm sorry, but it is.

People can complain all day about skins over android, but there is innovation there. Split screen, tap to wake, and tons of other useful features came from OEMs and was then baked into the next version of the dessert named operating system. Of all of them, I prefer EMUI. Again, this is the first phone I didn't HAVE to root.

I can set the phone up how I like, thanks to EMUI. That and the performance of the phone. Honor doesn't hold back on their processors or RAM. I have seen phones that have 4 gigs of RAM but only use 3gb or it...

But all of the Honor phones are fast, smooth and glitch free. Well, within reason and for the price.

I LOVE how fast and accurate the fingerprint sensor is. Both my previous Honor, and this one as well, are extremely fast and accurate. I also love the positioning of it.

In my opinion, once you try the reader on the back, and get used to it, I don't see myself ever going back to one on the front. It's just so easy to use this way. My finger is already there.

I can also say this, because the fingerprint reader in on the back, I drop my phone less. Plain and simple. I don't have to adjust and contort my hand to move the thumb down.

AND, they didn't screw up and put the sensor right next to the camera lens so you touch the lens every time also (yes, that's you S8...).

(Battery is)Good. No complaints. Honestly I haven't noticed any difference between the S7 Edge, HTC 10, Honor 8, and the Honor 7x. All are comparable and decent.

This phone does not have fast charging so charging is slower than what most of us are probably used to. But the 3340mah battery is definitely large enough to get through a long day and you can just charge it overnight. It uses the older Micro-USB charging, but, at least we all still have a ton of those laying around, right?

    Ryan

The EMUI "skin" on top of Android 7.0 is great. It’s a light tweak on stock Android, with some added features that I really like. The transitions are smooth and I haven't come across any lag whatsoever.

Just to note, I’ve only had it two weeks, but so far the battery life has been great. It easily gets me through a full day even with heavy usage, and a day and a half with light/moderate usage. That’s pretty hard to find these days, at least in my world. I use my phone A LOT throughout the day for both work and personal usage, so I need a good battery. The 7x lasts longer than my S8+ would.

  • BUILD & DESIGN

    Chuck

It is a very solid device, which you can tell from the moment that you pick it up. It feels very solid, not cheap at all. It has the 18:9 display which makes it taller and thinner and does take a little getting used to. The back is clean with the fingerprint scanner and two cameras.

    4d0b3d42-b97a-4494-9646-03188afa8f3b.jpg

    Matt

Let me start by saying this phone is extremely well built! I gotta say this thing feels very nice! If you didn't know this was a $200 device it would be easy to think it costs twice that. It’s one solid chunk of aluminum and it feels absolutely great to hold. The only break in the aluminum is the antenna lines on the back. This is a huge upgrade over the 6x. The back of the phone has the dual camera set up and the fingerprint sensor which is very fast and accurate. The front side houses the big 5.9” screen and the front facing camera. Overall the build of this phone is something more comparable to a device that costs twice as much. Honor really outdid themselves with the build quality.

    Rick

The build quality is nuts. I think back to the plastic build of the Galaxy S3 and 4 and laugh at that compared to this inexpensive phone. Aluminum build that feels premium. It's is a good size too. A little too big for my personal preference, but I am in the minority here. Big is the thing now. Everybody loves the big phones. Well, this gives you big screen in a manageable size phone.

    Ryan

First, the build quality of the 7x is outstanding and feels better in my hand than just about every other phone I’ve had...and I’ve had A LOT of phones. The weight is perfect, materials are premium and it looks awesome!

  • CONCLUSION

    Chuck

If I didn't know better I would definitely expect this phone to cost more than it does. It is a solidly made unit that I would have no problem recommending to anyone on a budget.

    Matt

I absolutely loved the Honor 7x during my test. It’s definitely missing a few key features such as USB-C, wireless charging, fast charging and NFC. Having said that it is a budget minded device so it’s somewhat forgivable. I do feel it should have included USB-C and some fast charging though. Those are becoming somewhat of an industry standard and probably should have been included. The performance was excellent on the phone especially for the price and so was the camera. This is a very solidly built device and I truly enjoyed it. At this price point there isn’t a phone out there that offers the performance, camera and build quality that the 7x does. This really is a stellar device for the price despite a few shortcomings. If you’re on a budget or just looking for a new phone to tinker with I can’t think of a phone I’d recommend more than the 7x. Just make sure you’re not comparing it to a Note 8, Mate 10, iPhone X or any other flagship device. This phone was not meant to compete with those devices and shouldn’t be compared to them. Although it may just surprise you if you do compare to one.

    Rick

So, to summarize, Not a flagship. Don't expect that. It will not have all the bells and whistles. But, nothing compares, in my opinion, to the VALUE here. Great phone and performance for the price. Pick one up and give it a try. I believe PayPal offers payments to those that qualify, where you can pay over a few months with no interest. Pay that way, if you can't afford to drop $200 right out of pocket for this phone.

I could buy 4 of these for what one of the flagships are costing now.

And I did buy multiple 7x phones. I liked it that much. I plan on giving them as gifts and to family as presents. You CAN NOT beat the value.

I can promise you that if you try this, you might not ever go back to the high dollar Samsung or iPhones again.

    Ryan

I think this hits all the major points that you will look for in researching a new smartphone. I can confidently say that anyone who buys this phone will not be disappointed. Honor has really done an amazing job with the 7x. They really are changing the game in mobile technology and giving the consumer exactly what they want in a device. I STILL can't believe the 7x only costs $199.
