University of Nottingham Ningbo China recruits 24 world-class professors to drive 300% increase in high quality PHD students to Ningbo

Following a 20m RMB (£2.3m) gift from Dr Li Dak Sum, 24 world-class chair professors will be appointed, further establishing UNNC and the City of Ningbo reputation as a destination for internationally-renowned research and innovation expertise. With this investment, and support from the Government, the University aims to then increase the number of high quality PHD students by 300% over the next five years.

Demonstrating the benefit of UNNC’s world-class research activity to the Ningbo economy, the launch event in Ningbo also saw the formal launch of a new 178m RMB (£20m) UK-China University of Nottingham Electrification Centre based in YuYao, Ningbo that will drive the future of vehicle propulsion. The £20M facility is supported by a £7M investment by the YuYao government a £12M by the University of Nottingham in both the UK and UNNC, as well as further external funding from industrial partners.

Electrification of land-based transport and other industrial systems is a key enabler for a future green and sustainable society. At the heart of this are the electrical machines and power electronics technologies which need to be power dense, efficient, reliable and cost competitive. The University of Nottingham is a world leader in research in this filed through its global Power Electronics and Machines Research group with facilities in UK and China.

The University of Nottingham is investing in this area of research with an aim to investigate all aspects of new electric propulsion systems including new materials, power conversion electronics and electrical machines. The University of Nottingham Electrification Centre (NEC) is a vehicle to take some of the electrical technologies developed through to commercialisation and exploitation. The NEC will house an advanced flexible manufacturing line in a state of the art facility in YuYao (Ningbo).

University of Nottingham Ningbo Provost, Professor Chris Rudd OBE said: “Research is in the DNA of our institution and we share the University of Nottingham’s passion for excellence with impact.

“We have made a commitment to investing in our staff, our students, our partners and our facilities and, as a result, we are seeing the remarkable growth in research outputs, the attraction of world-class talent and momentum for translating this research to impact not only regionally for the people of Ningbo but nationally and internationally.”
