a 3-year phd scholarships in high customization computed tomography is available at the technical university of denmark. the project will be supervised by yi yang. the successful candidate will join the chemistry branch of the centre for energy resources engineering (cere-kemi), as a part of the physical and biophysical chemistry section at dtu chemistry and will be working with a team of gifted interdisciplinary young researchers.
the position is available from december 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter.
responsibilities and tasks
the project is a collaboration between dtu chemistry and the geological survey of denmark and greenland. the overarching goal of the project is to design microfluidic experiments that can be combined with novel imaging techniques (e.g. synchrotron radiation-based computed tomography) to observe and understand chemically induced microstructure evolution in porous media on varied length scales. the phd candidate will have freedom in identifying key scientific challenges and propose innovative solutions. the specific tasks through which the research goal will be achieved will be agreed based on timely discussions between the candidate and the supervisor and will match the candidate’s competencies and interests to the extent possible. the main responsibilities of the candidate include:
designing sample environments for flow-through experiments that can be carried out at synchrotron beamlines
designing imaging protocols that allows the continuous collection of tomographic data with a changing field of view
applying for synchrotron user time through peer-reviewed beamtime proposals
rudimentary programming ╟ e.g. for process automation and image processing
interpreting imaging data in the context of parallel cere-kemi projects, e.g. how do phase equilibria, geochemical reactions and fluid flow form a concerted driving force for multiscale solid structure evolution
qualifications
candidates should have a two-year master\'s degree (120 ects points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master\'s degree in chemical engineering, environmental engineering or mechanical engineering. it is important that the candidate is self-initiated, be considerate in being a team player, while feels comfortable to work independently in case of need. emphasis will be put on the candidate’s ability to identify key scientific questions and to propose practical solutions. good communication proficiency in english is favoured but not mandatory. all in all, we look for an ambitious and resilient young researcher who has the potential to bring changes to the state of the art in direct imaging of fluid-mediated microstructures evolution.
approval and enrolment
the scholarship for the phd degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at dtu. for information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the phd study programme, please see the dtu phd guide.
we offer
dtu is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. we offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. we strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.
salary and appointment terms
the appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the danish confederation of professional associations. the allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. the period of employment is 3 years.
