Abstract:Virtualization, as a main stream solution for server consolidation, is the core technology of cloud computing. Virtualization allows multiple servers to be transformed from material resources into logical resources, thus to constitute a unified resource pool, and ultimately to realize joint computing and resource sharing. Server system and storage system are centralized based on IaaS service mode thereby. Docker, a lightweight virtual machine, is also a Linux container. Contrary to the previous sandbox technology, Docker makes a breakthrough and liberates the application deployment. In view of the competition between Virtualization and Docker, this paper probes into the architectural differences between Docker and KVM. A basic performance test on Docker and KVM based on Linux platform is designed and constructed. Test results were analyzed so as to reveal the differences between Docker and KVM, and to discuss the strengths and limitations of Virtualization and Containering as well as their prospects.
