I'm honoured to be with you today for your commitment from one of the finest university in the world. Truth be told, I never graduated from college, and this is the closest I 'm ever gotten to a college graduation. Today, I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it, no big deal, just stories.

The 1st story is about connnecting the dots. I dropped out Reed college after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out? It started before I was born.

My biological mother was a young graduate un-married student and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strong that i shoud be adopted by college graduates. So everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. My biological mother found out later that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would go to college. This was the start in my life.

And 17 years later, I did go to college. But I naively choose college that was alsmost as expensive as Stanford and all of my working class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After 6 months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea of how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my partents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time but looking back, it was one of the best decision I ever made. The minutes I dropped out, I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin drop in on the ones that looked for more interesting. And much of what I sturmbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on.

Let me give you one example. Reed college that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Througout the campus every poster, every labe on every drawer was beautiful hand-calligraphy. Because I had dropped out, and didin't have to take the normal classes. I decided to take a calligrahy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and San serif typefaces about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations about what makes great typography great. It was wonderful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture and I found it fascinating. None of this had even a hope of any practical applicaiton in my life but 10 years later, when we were designing the 1st Macintoshi computer, it all came back to me, and we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I never dropped in on that single class in college, the Mac would never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. If I never had dropped out, I would never dropped in on that class and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.

Of course, it was impposible to connect the dots looking forwards when I was in college, but it was very clear looking backwards 10 years later. Again, you cannot connect the dots looking forwards, you can only connect them loooking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will some-how connect in your future. You have to trust in something, your gut, your destiny, karma, whatever, because believing that the dots will connect down the road, will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path. And that would make all difference.

译：当然，在当时的大学里，我不可能向前看，去连接那些点点滴滴，但是10年后往回看就很清楚。你不可能向前看去联接那些点滴，你只能在回头看的时候去联接它们。所以，你必须要相信那些点滴，它们也许日后会有某种联接。无论如何，你必须要相信什么，相信你的勇气、你的命运、因果。因为去相信那些点滴会联接你后续的路，甚至在你偏离了那些看起来很美好的路时，也会给你信心并使你跟随你的心。那会让你与众不同。

• 一个人的成功其实和他的青少年经历息息相关。其实，我们并没有越走越远，最终，在关键的时候，必然会和当时的我们重新交心，做一个connection。然后把那些点点滴滴都串联起来，会有意想不到的收获。
• 所以选择青少年时什么样的生活很重要。不是人云亦云，而是follow to your heart.
