Systems and methods provide for the characterization of flooring surfaces. A contact body (e.g., having a mass) may be contacted against a floor at a velocity. The contact between the body and floor may result in force transmission across a contact surface between the body and floor. Forces across the contact surface (e.g., normal forces, shear forces, and/or a combination thereof) may be measured by one or more transducers. The response associated with the contact may be measured and analyzed to generate a "contact signature" that characterizes the floor.
