Now that we understand what an ActiveGate is, let’s go into more detail about the two types of supported ActiveGates.
Dynatrace supports two types of ActiveGate: Environment ActiveGate and Cluster ActiveGate.
If you use Dynatrace SaaS, you will only need an Environment ActiveGate.
Without an ActiveGate, SaaS functions entirely in the cloud – all software and management tools are available through the secured Web UI.
If cloud-based installation is a security concern, download the ActiveGate to your data center.
Once installed, the SaaS Environment ActiveGate can only connect to the tenant that downloaded the software.
All Agent data will then be collected, aggregated, and transmitted to the Dynatrace cloud server via an encrypted connection.
Dynatrace Managed deployments typically require both ActiveGate types, although the most important type for Dynatrace Managed is the Cluster ActiveGate.
Managed Dynatrace does not necessarily need an ActiveGate, particularly for small or simple environments.
Once you have installed the Dynatrace software on your server and created your cluster, the Management Console provides control over your hardware, and the Web UI provides access to OneAgent software and data monitoring.
However, for remote or secured environments, Cluster ActiveGates are designed to be shared between tenants or multiple environments within a Cluster.
In this example, on-premise agents are tied into your Dynatrace Cluster directly, but remote agents, Synthetic or JavaScript agents, and Mobile applications all need to communicate to your Cluster through a firewall.
Install the Cluster ActiveGate in a network segment that all your agents can access.
Dynatrace UI and RUM data will then be securely communicated to the cluster.
If all of your network segments need their own private ActiveGate, you can download the Environment ActiveGate software and install it directly on each tenant.
As we learned with the SaaS configuration, each Environment ActiveGate can only connect to the specific tenant the software was downloaded from, and the ActiveGate will be dedicated to bundling all Agent data, not just UI and RUM information.
