We must interpret a bad temper as a sign of inferiority. Alfred Adler

Overcoming difficulties leads to courage, self-respect, and knowing yourself.

Alfred Adler

What do you first do when you learn to swim? You make mistakes, do you not? And what happens? You make other mistakes, and when you have made all the mistakes you possibly can without drowning - and some of them many times over - what do you find? That you can swim? Well - life is just the same as learning to swim! Do not be afraid of making mistakes, for there is no other way of learning how to live!

Alfred Adler

Men of genius are admired, men of wealth are envied, men of power are feared; but only men of character are trusted.

Alfred Adler

You can be healed of depression if every day you begin the first thing in the morning to consider how you will bring a real joy to someone else.

Alfred Adler

It is very obvious that we are not influenced by "facts" but by our interpretation of the facts.

Alfred Adler

An educator's most important task, one might say his holy duty, is to see to it that no child is discouraged at school, and that a child who enters school already discouraged regains his self-confidence through his school and his teacher. This goes hand in hand with the vocation of the educator, for education is possible only with children who look hopefully and joyfully upon the future.

Alfred Adler

Courage is not an ability one either possess or lacks. Courage is the willingness to engage in a risk-taking behavior regardless of whether the consequences are unknown or possibly adverse. We are capable of courageous behavior provided we are willing to engage in it. Given that life offers few guarantees, all living requires risk-taking.

Alfred Adler

The educator must believe in the potential power of his pupil, and he must employ all his art in seeking to bring his pupil to experience this power.

Alfred Adler

Play is a child's work and this is not a trivial pursuit.

Alfred Adler

Everything can always be different!

Alfred Adler

To be a human being means to possess a feeling of inferiority which constantly presses towards its own conquest. The greater the feeling of inferiority that has been experienced, the more powerful is the urge for conquest and the more violent the emotional agitation.

Alfred Adler

Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils.--Alfred Adler

If something causes you more stress than it's worth, get rid of it. --Chris Thomas

Web/software development is a craft, just like being a musician.

My work should speak for me, not my age.

Frankly, a company that wouldn’t hire me based on my age, and not my demonstrable knowledge/skills is probably not the kind I’d want to work for anyway.

Even if it is as a support, coding can be a huge help to become a top performer/better performer at your job

Expertise is built in increments, so you just have to start and keep going.

You’re only as old as you let yourself feel. You’re at an advantageous position in that you are considering a software career now. Many 20 somethings do not know what they want. You can do it man.

An astute and engaged 50 year old will accomplish more than a dull or disinterested 20 year old.

Fields centered in technology are on a steep ramp of change, which demands a commitment to continuous learning.

“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today.”

If a company holds your age against you they are not worth working for anyway.

If not now, then when? You are only going to get older :).

Programming is one of these things that no matter how old you are, if you get good at it, nothing can stop you.

Plenty of time left to start a new career, we’re all probably going to be working into our 70’s anyway so we’re not even half way through our working lives now,

It also depends on your attitude. Don't be the old guy who is down on any new technology and sneers at anyone that uses anything newer than Emacs and C++. Use your experience to make informed decisions about what technology choices to make. If that means sticking with older, proven technologies fine, but do it because it's the right choice not because you want to protect the rapidly obsoleting expertise you spent years building up or because you're scared of some snotty kid with his Node JS and his Go taking your job".

As to technology, take it as it comes. The world is very different today than from when I started (FORTRAN on punched tape), but the changes unrolled over time. On the other hand, the problems are much the same, how do I convert this human requirement into something a computer can do? And how do I avoid making mistakes, and then find the mistakes I inevitably make? Languages, development environments, toolkits, APIs etc. are just means to an end. You learn them when you need them.

I see a software developer as someone who takes a customer requirement and converts it into precise instructions for a computer. And that job is never going to go away. There will always be a need for people who understand, an order of magnitude better than the general public, what computers can and cannot do, and have a knowledge of a large number of tools (libraries, APIs, interfaces, whatever) which can be used to make that happen.

Every two years, there is another “game changing” platform. Don’t panic. Take the 3 or 4 days it takes to learn the new programming environment and go about your business. Over 30 years, I had to relearn almost everything about every 4 years more or less. I work with a team of six developers from ages 48 to 56. All of us have totally retrained our skills from 3 to 8 times.

If you like people, you will like managing people. If you don’t like people, you will not be a successful manager.

"Don’t listen to anyone who says you’ll never be worth anything unless you started programming in junior high. The tech field is big, and there’s room for a lot of people. When I was younger, it was tough admitting to things I didn’t know. Now that I’m older, it’s easier to deal with that initial frustration".

When you turn 30, you have no experience with being 30. Nobody has any experience with the age they become, which means we’re all newbies at life.

I don't think human beings learn anything without desperation. Desperation is a necessary ingredient to learning anything or creating anything. Period. If you ain't desperate at some point, you ain't interesting. -Jim Carrey

I know this sounds strange, but as a kid, I was really shy. Painfully shy. The turning point was freshman year, when I was the biggest geek alive. No one, I mean no one, even talked to me. -Jim Carrey

I got a lot of support from my parents. That's the one thing I always appreciated. They didn't tell me I was being stupid; they told me I was being funny. -Jim Carrey
