Lesson 8 A famous Monastery [ 2007-1-5 ]
1. what are the ... used for? Pass connects Switzerland to Italy.
2. For hundreds of years, .. have saved the lives of travllers crossing the dangerous pass.
3. These friendly dogs, which were first brought from Asia, were used as watch dogs , even in Roman times.
4. Now that the tunnel has been build through the moutains, the pass is less dangerous.
5. But each year, the dogs are still sent out into the snow whenever a traveller is in difficulty.
6. Despite the new tunnel, there are so a few people who rashly attempt to cross the pass on foot.
7. The dogs have to be kept in a special enclosure.
8. The temperature drops to minus 30 degrees. (-30'C)
9. The monks prefer winter to summer for they have more privacy.
10. The dogs have greater freedom too. For they are allowed to wander outside their enclosure.
11. The only regular visitors... Easter. These young people who love the peace of the moutains always receive a warm welcome at .. monastery.

9. The titanic turned just in time, narrowly missing the imensive .. of ice, which rows over 100 feet out of the water beside her.
10. Suddenly ,there was a slighly trembling sound from the below.
11. The noise had been so faint, but no one thought that the ship had been damaged.
12. Below the captain realized to his horror that the titanlic was sinking rapidly.The oder to abandon ship was given, and hundreds of people plunged into the icy water.
