In the section, you will hear two students presenting a tutorial on two asian countries Malaysia and Singapore. First, look at the questions 21 to 30.
Nancy and Jenny are presenting a first of our pro Asia today.
T: You look at Singapore and Malaysia, don't you?
N: Yes. We found lots of similarity between the two countries.
T: Do you follow the outline that I gave you?
J: Yes, we did. First of all, the total land area of Singapore is 630 square kilometers. While the Malaysia was 329,758 square kilometers. Obviously, Malaysia is a much larger area with a bigger population than Singapore, almost 27 million. It is bigger Australia's population. In fact, we have 19 million, 700 thousand. Singarpore has just over 3 million.
T: Did you look at the populartion mix?
N: The population of both Malaysia and Singapore are multiracial. They both have mixture of Chinese, Malaysian, Indian and any other ethics group as well, who always get ? together. The break down of population is different though. In Malaysia, the Malaysian or .. as they are called, outnumner Chinese. They make up probabely 65 percent of the population. In Singapore 3 quarter of the population is Chinese with only a few hundred of Malay and India. English is widely used in Malaysia as well as in Singapore.
J: Yes, they all study compoundsively English at school. And aduct? use English a lot in their daily life. Singaporian send their children to study abroad in English speaking countries. In recent years, Malaysian are also studying oversea and getting oversea work experience.
T: Australia has a fairly stable relationship with Singapore this years. Can you briefly talk about that?
N: Yes, Singapore and Australia have alway maintence friendly and warm relationship. As Jen said, Many students come to Australia to study here. And often, they stay here to work. Lots of Australia live and work in Singapore. Singapore was the one of the first Asian countries to really take advantage of its geographical location and technologies advance that will make at the at the last century. It is a strong econmics.
J: Singapore and Australia signed an expensive trade acout? in Feb, which cover all sorts of subject, from education to custom at the airport. It is recorded that this kind of relationship and tie are really ? So trade between Malaysia and Singopore are continue to grow, but we are not the biggest trade country of Singapore. They are the U.S. Japan and Malaysia. Yes, interestingly but not surprisingly I guess, Malaysia's top three trade partner are the U.S. Japan and Singapore.
T: Yes, Malaysia and Singapore are neighbours and you will expert that. What did you dicovered between Malaysia and Australia?
J: It isn't been relationship as strong as Singapore-Australia relationship. Malaysian and Australian get along well on a personal level. They have been an incresing number of tourist travelling between the two countries. So it's not just students who are coming here. For the historical reason, Malaysia Australia and Singapore as well have lots in common. You know, were both British colonies. Malaysia now does not want to blindly follow Western countries idea. It is fairly enough.
T: Yes, we will talk about this in next seminar, Australia international relation in the region.
J: It seems to be misunderstanding between Malaysia and Australia. But the diplomatic said it is exaggerated by the media.
T: We all know the power? the media has. Was there anything else?
N: Well, yes. I found that Singaporian are generally well-educated, well traverl, and knoeledgable. They enjoy quality of life by other countries, especially in Asian countries. The Singapore government spend lots of money in eduation and technology.
T: Is this going continue, did you look at the government agenda for the future?
N: They are developing a knowledge based economic. Unlike other southeast countries, Singapore hasn't dependent on the product and export of comodity, they intend to be IT-driven with the highly skill economic.
T: I see. How did this differ from Malaysia?
J: Well, the Malaysian are very enterprising people. They also well-educated and highly skill like the Singaporian. They've got a strong work ?. We both found that of the two countries, Malaysian are much Asian in their way of thinking, althought they seem to mix Eastern and Western tradition easily. This could be one of the reasons that tourism is doing so well in Malaysia. The economic once rely on soft raw material. But that's changed a lot. And the experts say Malaysia has a huge future.
T: You've obvious enjoyed your reseach. I am sure you enjoy learning more about the region, as we continue on with the other overviews.
