The Standard Library

• The standard library is a broad group of functionality that comes with C++
implementations.
• Remember using namespace std; ? That tells the compiler that we want to
access the standard library functionality without using the prefix std::
• The standard library grew out of The Standard Template Library (STL) - a
collection of templates from pre-ISO standard C++
• It also contains functionality from the C Library

• Some highlights:
• Containers: vectors, maps, queues, stacks, etc.
• Iterators: objects that iterate (or “walk”) through containers
• Algorithms: functionality like sorting, searching, merging, etc.
• Input/Output: streams, files, etc.
