GOAL

WebLogic Server (WLS) has several server cache directories it uses to store deployed applications and shared libraries. Each server (admin and managed) has its own cache directories named cache, stage and tmp. Sometimes these cache directories become stale and there can be a mismatch between what's running in memory and what's in the cache directory. This can cause various WebLogic Portal (WLP) issues such as NullPointerExceptions, broken portlets and deployment problems, to name a few. When experiencing these types of issues the first thing you should do is clear the cache directories to see if it resolves the issue.

This document explains how to clear the server cache directories (cache, stage, tmp).

SOLUTION

Note: This applies to all WLP versions from 8.1 all the way through 10.3.X.
 

1. Shutdown all admin and managed servers.

2. For WLP versions 9.2 and above, delete the following Admin and Managed server cache directories:

    <Domain>/servers/<Server Name>/cache
    <Domain>/servers/<Server Name>/stage (if exists)
    <Domain>/servers/<Server Name>/tmp

   For WLP version 8.1, delete the equivalent server cache directories:

   <Domain>/<Server Name>/stage
   <Domain>/<Server Name>/.internal
   <Domain>/<Server Name>/.wlnotdelete

Notes
The domain directory structures are different between 8.1 and all other versions
The servers must be shutdown in order to clear the cache directories
The stage directory normally doesn't exist for the admin server unless the application is deployed to the admin server (e.g, in WLP 8.1)

3. Restart all admin and managed servers.  The cache directories (cache, stage, tmp) are then automatically recreated upon server startup and application deployment.
