MATH 2B CALCULUS IIPython

Java Python MATH 2B CALCULUS II

Course Description: This is the second part of a 4-quarter sequence in calculus for  all math majors and majors in the schools of Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Information and Computer Sciences.  In this course, topics covered include definite integrals, the fundamental theorem of calculus, applications of integration including finding areas and volumes, techniques of integration, infinite sequences and series.

Prerequisite: MATH 2A or MATH 5A or MATH 7A or AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC. AP Calculus AB with a minimum score of 4.  AP Calculus BC with a minimum score of 3.

Learning Outcomes:

1.  Students will be able to use advanced techniques of integration, including integration by parts, trigonometric integrals, trigonometric substitution, partial fractions, and integration of rational func-tions;

2.  Students will be able to apply  definite integrals to calculate geometric quantities such as areas between curves, volumes using disk, washer, and shell methods, arc lengths, and surface areas of solids of revolution;

3.  Students will be able to evaluate improper integrals and apply them to calculate limiting cases of integrals;

4.  Students will be able to determine the convergence or divergence of infinite sequences and series using appropriate tests, such as the integral test, comparison tests, ratio and root tests;

5.  Students will be able to represent functions using power series, find the radius and interval of con- vergence of power series, and approximate function values using Taylor and Maclaurin series.

Course Structure and Delivery Mode: This course is conducted entirely online.  You will access the course material and activities on Canvas and are required to participate in asynchronous class meetings via watching the recordings. Zoom link of o   ce hours is on Canvas.  If you need technical assistance at any time during the course or need to report a problem with Canvas, please contact the OIT Service Desk using their online form (https://contact.eee.uci.edu/), or by phone at 949-824-2222.

Course Communication : We will use Canvas to make announcements, communicate information, post assignments and corresponding due dates, and discuss course-related topics.  Please note, it is your respon- sibility to check Canvas’s dashboard regularly, as it will contain important information about upcoming class assignments, activities, or concerns.

Class Policies:

1.  You are expected to participate the lecture of each day online. Absences and tardies are unacceptable. Please remain in class until you are dismissed. You may be dropped from the course if you have three or more unexcused absences.

2.  Please stay focused on this course-do not read other material, sleep, use cell phone or talk while class is in session.

3.  The  academic work in this course will be subject to the guidelines of the UCI Honor  Code  (see https://aisc.uci.edu/).

Examinations: There will be two 2-hour at-home Midterms.  Tentative dates for Midterms are July 12, 2021 and July 31,  2021.   Most of the exam problems are similar to those in the homework and lecture examples.  Calculators and cell phone are not allowed in exams.

Make up exams will only be given in cases of emergencies or unexpected con icts and must inform me in advance.  Also any athletes that will be representing UCI in an event scheduled during an exam time should let me know in advance. Documentation will  be  required!   Any make-up must be taken within one week of the scheduled exam date.  In order that grading be fair and impartial, make-up exams will be more di   cult, since the student has more time to prepare.  If you miss an exam and do not contact your instructor within a week, you will be given a zero for that exam.

Quiz: Weekly quizzes will be given during the last 15 minutes of class on Wednesdays/Mondays.  Please check the schedule regul MATH 2B CALCULUS IIPython arly as it may be updated as the quarter progresses. The quizzes will be based on that week’s homework assignment. There will be no make-up quizzes.

Homework: Homework will be assigned, collected, and distributed on WebAssigns  (by Cengage).  As- signed homework will be graded automatically.  There will be totally 4 homework assignments.  No late homework will be accepted.

Tentative Grade Policy: Grades  will be based upon homework,  quizzes,  and two at-home Midterm Exams.  Grades will be weighted as follows:

Homework:  15%; Quizzes :  15%; Midterm I: 30%; Midterm II: 30%;

Performance (participations/improvement/consistency):  10%.

The grade for improvement/consistency rewards improvement in the course and/or rewards consistent performance on all quizzes/exams/participations, and is applied only to benefit the student. In borderline cases, being in class on time will be considered as well. The grade is based on the activity of Canvas.

Total is 100 points. If the grade range is less than 60, the letter grade is F. If the grade range is more than 60, the cutofs for the final letter grade are showed in the following table. I reserve the right to modify this table in order to follow the grade policy of the Department of Mathematics.
