1. Go to page to http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html find the latest build

2. Install from command line:

sudo zypper ar http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/<SUSE version> VLC  
//As my os is SLED 11 SP3, so for <SUSE version>, I used "SUSE11"
sudo zypper mr -r VLC
sudo zypper in vlc

3. After install, execute "vlc" to open the VLC.

4. Problems encountered:

4.1 Error happens when launch VLC."VLC is not supposed to be run as root. Sorry"

solution: vi /usr/bin/vlc, search for geteuid and replace it with getppid.

4.2 Can not play *.mkv files."mkv demux error: cannot find KaxSegment or missing mandatory KaxInfo"

solution:
 a. In Tools > Preferences, check "all" on the bottom right (under the list of categories). 
 b. Expand "Input / Codecs" on the list and choose "Demuxers". 
 c. After that, for "Demux Module" choose "avformat demux"from the drop down menu.(from the comments in community, you can choose "FFmpeg Demux" on some other platform)
