Heavy Use Of Latches: 'cas latch' And 'simulator hash latch' (Doc ID 243778.1)
fact: Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition 9.0.1
fact: Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition 9.2
fact: HP 9000 Series HP-UX (64-bit)
symptom: Heavy latch contention in the SGA
symptom: Latch: cas latch
symptom: Latch: simulator hash latch
change: Init.ora database parameters changes
cause: db_cache_advice init.ora parameter was set to ON
fix:
Set back db_cache_advice to OFF.
Enable this parameter only when you want to estimate the db_cache_size
parameter value.
'Cas latch' is used to simulate an atomic "compare and swap"
functionality" for those platforms that are thought not to support this
feature in the native
operating system. If the operating system does offer this support then this
latch is unused.
HP does not support CAS so this latch is used.
'Simulator' latches are also used for buffer cache simulation when enabling the
db_cache_advice parameter.
