Using the DBMaintenance Resource Pack utility
CommVault provides a utility for the CommServe database that performs a number of maintenance tasks to ensure your CommServe performs optimally.
CommVault recommends that you run the DBMaintenance tool every 4-6 weeks to prevent data corruption and prevent excessive index fragmentation.
When an active CommServe database has not been maintained, you may see one or more of the following symptoms:
- Sluggish general operation in the GUI.
- Schedules and jobs fail to launch and run properly
- Excessive datafile growth of the CommServ or TempDB databases
If you experience any of the above issues you should consider running the maintenance tool against your database.
Using the Utility:
- It is highly recommended (but not absolutely necessary) that CommVault Software services are stopped while performing database maintenance.
- The first time this tool is run, a '-full' maintenance is recommended.
- A '-full' maintenance is recommended every 6 months thereafter.
- A '-recommended' maintenance is recommended every 4-6 weeks.
- Copy the dbmaintenance.exe executable to \Base on CommServe.
Starting with CommVault Software version 8.0 the dbMaintenance.exe is located by default in ...\Program Files\CommVault\Simpana\Base folder.
The utility can be found on your Resource Pack CD for CommVault Software Versions 7.0 and older.
- If possible, stop all Galaxy services before running the utility.
- From a command prompt run:
dbmaintenance -full
or
dbmaintenance -recommended
Notes:
- It is highly recommended (but not absolutely necessary) that CommVault Software services are stopped while performing database maintenance.
- Please note that database maintenance may take some time to finish executing depending the size and condition of your database.
- A '-full' maintenance will check the database for inconsistencies, reindex all tables and shrink the database.
- A '-recommended' maintenance will check the database for inconsistencies and will reindex the tables which are the largest and most often accessed/modified. A shrinkdatase is not performed.
- Shrinking the database is not recommended on a regular basis - for this reason do not perform. a '-full' maintenance regularly. If you would like to reindex all tables, there is a '-reindexall' option that can be used. Combining this with the -checkdb option will have desired effect.
Additional Info:
Please refer to the readme.txt file included with the utility for additional information.
