Symptoms

When using a 10.2 TNS listener to connection to an 8i database, via dedicated connection model, the following error is reported :

ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connection

Cause

10.2 TNS Listener and 8i database is not a supported combination Note 207303.1 describes the interoperability certification for different Oracle versions.

Solution

1. Use a 8i or 9i TNS listener to service connections to the 8i database. By default a database will registered with a TNS listener running on port 1521. Following article explains service registration in full. Note 76636.1 Service Registration in Net 8i

2. Upgrade the 8i database to 9i or 10g.

3. Switch connection model to MTS. To make a 8i database use MTS, add the pfile

mts_dispatchers = "(protocol=TCP)"

Restart the database and ensure you can see a dispatcher started. lsnrctl services command should show something along the lines of :

LSNRCTL> services
Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=nodea)(PORT=1521)))
Services Summary...
Service "v8174.uk.oracle.com" has 1 instance(s).

The command completed successfully

Then ensure the net service name being used to connect has (SERVER = SHARED)
