The information in this article applies to:
Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition
Oracle Data Guard and Standby Database
Symptom(s)
~~~~~~~~~~
You have a Data Guard Configuration running either in Maximum Availability or
Maximum Protection Mode. Now you want to remove your Data Guard environment
for any reason. You remove the Standby Database and delete all configuration
files and parameters. If you want to restart the Primary Database, the startup
fails in mount state with the following error:
ORA-16072: a minimum of one standby database destination is required
Instance terminated by LGWR
You may also get:
ORA-03113: End-of-file on Communication Channel
Change(s)
~~~~~~~~~~
Removed DataGuard Configuration (Physical Standby Database)
Cause
~~~~~~~
Although you removed all configuration files, removed the Standby Database,
and reset all LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n-Parameters, the Primary Database has still
the Protection Mode stored in the Data Dictionary. The Protection Mode
requires a running connection to a Standby Database with LGWR SYNC as
Log-Transportation Mode. Since the standby is not available anymore,
LGWR of the primary terminates the instance.
Fix
~~~~
Startup the Primary Database in Mount State and set the Protection Mode back
to Maximum Performance Mode, which is the Default:
SQL> ALTER DATABASE SET STANDBY DATABASE TO MAXIMIZE PERFORMANCE;
Then shutdown the Database and restart again.
